You also want to see if the docking station you are checking out keeps USB  ports powered even if the laptop is turned off .

The ability to keep your laptop running cool is a top priority so look for reviews or discussions about the design and cooling abilities of the different laptop docking stations on the market.

There is one that actually lifts the laptop off the table so the air can circulate underneath, this is very important as computing speeds get faster and faster and require better cooling. Over the long haul this is can make a big difference in the life of your laptop.

In looking through reviews at online marketing places I noticed one particular device, that looks like an upright modem, having a lot of trouble with driver problems.  Definitely check through reviews to see if a particular operating system is having trouble talking to a given device.

If you read through enough reviews you can get a feel for a product.  Some people are just excited and leave a review right away.  Before my purchases I like to see how long they’ve had the unit before they leave a review.

What I've noticed in my search on docking stations, if I also search for port replicators,  I will get more results.  Where it gets a little confusing is mp3 docking stations like the one dell is about inserting an mp3 player to hook up to a speaker system.

And of course with this type there are several for the popular ipod.

The buzz right now is being able to hot swap your peripherals or even the notebook itself,  so you can really speed up access time.  Just be aware of the limitations when  you're reading product specification pages.  Hopefully with enough research in the right places you can find the perfect notebook docking station for your needs.
